What About Leaders Whose Top Skill Is “Window Dressing Empathy”

Redefining The Role Of The Leader In The Reskilling Era is an excellent article in the December 2019 McKinsey Quarterly

Below are a sampling of interesting quotes:

“Part of the solution may be for leaders to dial up their levels of empathy and humility and focus more on enabling the best in their people, rather than commanding it from them”

“It’s about transitioning your culture so that leaders see the need for change, are rewarded for it, and are committed to lifelong learning—and unlearning, because what got them into their current leadership roles is no longer sufficient.”

“Because it’s one thing to have the mind-set that the world’s changing really fast, but if everyone keeps operating in cubicles, sitting in on conference calls, and going over PowerPoint slides, then your way of working is not matching up with your new mind-set.”

“Most of all, we need humble leaders—in part, because increasingly they will need to be enablers of others, not in charge of others. This requires a very different mind-set. In a world of reskilling, a leader will be a person who needs to act in service to others, empowering a group of employees to do things on their own.”

“The leaders and organizations that will succeed are those that put human values at their core.”

Current thinking assumes that the today’s leaders are at a stage where they can transition and grow from being a reasonably  effective leader in the current era  into a more enabling empathetic leader needed in the era of reskilling.

What seems to be missing is how to  deal with leaders whose top skill is “window dressing empathy”? Are they even in a place within themselves where empathy can be acquired?

I ask this because of my daily work with clients who are bullied in the workplace. Its my suggestion that nearly 30 percent of our clients have been  psychologically harmed as a result of being bullied by their bosses who seem incapable of genuine empathy. Canadian and American studies have found roughly the same staggering percentage.  Canadian studies show that 37 per cent of Canadian workers have been bullied.

Do bullies have the capacity to change beyond “window dressing empathy”? My experience is that companies do a dreadful job of managing bullies and frequently the victim is the one who is fired, at the hands of a highly manipulative bully who is well practiced in making it look like the victim is problem. In fact, bullies are often top performers within management systems that fail to see the collateral damage that trails behind their progress or they can see the damage but they value short term profit instead of putting human values at their core. Are today’s management systems ready for the reskilling era?

Job Search Engineer -- How To Land An Interview

ales-krivec-VvUuYalbHMk-unsplash%2B%25281%2529.jpg

Emily  thought her job search should be easy. Just go to an online platform like Indeed.ca and apply to as many jobs as you can... right? ...

Wrong! And,  here is why.

Dr. John Sullivan writes in an ERE Recruiting Intelligence post that “for the specific case of an online job posting, on average,

1,000 individuals will see a job post,

200 will begin the application process,

100 will complete the application,

75 of those 100 resumes will be screened out by either the ATS or a recruiter,

25 resumes will be seen by the hiring manager,

4 to 6 will be invited for an interview,

1 to 3 of them will be invited back for final interview,

1 will be offered that job and 80 percent of those receiving an offer will accept it (Talent Function Group LLC)”.

Most career professionals would advise Emily to get ahead of the posting through field research and other networking strategies.

If you are unknown to the employer your chances of “just” landing an interview are about six percent.

Emily’s chances of getting an interview and landing a position will dramatically increase by having a conversation with the hiring manager, before the position is posted or having a referral from an employee inside the company. She could expedite this process by working with a career management consultant or career professional.

Job Search Engineer – Interview Tip -Behavioural Questions

sami-takarautio-JiqalEW6Ml0-unsplash.jpg

Wednesday’s Job Search Engineer is a weekly blog post with quick questions and answers about basic  job searches

Are You Having Trouble With Behavioral Questions?

Behavioural questions are the ones where the interviewer asks you to describe a time where you dealt with a particular experience such as: dealing with a conflict with co worker or boss or difficult customer, too much work on your plate, or a failure on the job. They will ask you what happened and what were the results

Here are 4 tips:

1.            Be ready for the above questions because they are very commonly asked in interviews.

2.            Be authentic. Don’t recite canned answers from the web they have heard them too  many times.

3.            Don’t ever say you have never had such an experience think harder you  have had them!

4.            Think like an interviewer. What kinds of problems will likely to come up frequently on the job you are being interviewed for?  Prepare a 40 second story from your experience for each one.

5.            Use the star method to answer the question

Job Search Engineer – End of interview Questions

Wednesday’s  Career Aviators Job Search Engineer is a weekly blog post with quick questions and answers about job search

You have prepared for your interview. You have practiced with some friends.

But wait, you forgot about that question they always ask at the end of the interview:  “Do you have any questions for us?”

It might be the most important part of the interview.

Here are 4 suggestions for your consideration:

1.            What are the biggest gaps that will need to be addressed by the person in this position

2.            If you hired me for the position and we were meeting about my progress 6 months from now, what successes would you want me to be describing to you

3.            What additional information can I provide about my qualifications

4.            What are the next steps in the interview process?

And …when they respond with their answers, don’t forget to look for opportunities where you can further demonstrate your fit!

Remember you are at the interview to see if the role and company fits what you are looking for as the employer is looking to see if you fit from their perspective.

Getting Unstuck

Photo by Blake Wheeler on Unsplash

Its Monday and can’t you just wait to get to work?

Maybe not?

Have you been thinking about a transition but you can never get past thinking about how good it would be.

Execution keeps getting put aside. You are “stuck” and you are not alone.

A big part of getting unstuck involves being able to powerfully say what skills and knowledge you choose to use in your next step and your deepest core values that will drive those strengths forward.

Define these qualities along with what you are most curious about and tell a couple of friends about your intentions.

If they both see you getting excited as you tell them your plans you are likely on the right path.

Move forward in this direction.

When your When your thinking mind thoughts ( I am going to fail, I will be embarrassed, I am too old/young I am not skilled enough etc.) creep in – notice them and ask yourself if those thoughts are helpful in moving forward?

If the answer is “no” keep moving in the planned direction without heeding to the thinking mind thoughts.

Let the thinking mind jabber on while you continue on your intended path.

Be ready to repeat this process over again many times. Each time you take action, your thinking mind will have less control over you.

Using such a practice you will become unstuck.
