Don’t Hide An Extended Break In Your Career History

Don’t try to hide an extended break in your career history as this post by #roberthalf advises. The article is well worth reading if you have been out of the workforce
https://www.roberthalf.com.au/blog/jobseekers/6-tips-getting-hired-after-career-break
The key is to be honest and proud of what you gained while away. Also, given that this is one of the worst periods of unemployment in Canadian history, employers recognize that transitions take time. Finally job search is tougher than any job you will do in your career so be self-compassionate and more things will open up for you.

Career Zoom In and Learning How to Podcast

Several Independent Career Professionals and myself are volunteering to make “Career Zoom In” a Canadian hub for job search advice and support, during one of the biggest employment crises in Canadian history. Our small team from the Tri-City Career Collective are volunteering to lead the "Zoom Ins", that feature a presentation by an independent  career professional or guest speaker on a topic vital to those conducting a job search or trying to find their new career direction. Followed by a Q&A, participants have the opportunity to get their questions answered by a panel of career experts on any aspect of job search or career discernment.. So far we have been able to bring excellent suggestions, advice and support to over 320 Canadians. Our aim is to bring this unique support to 300 participants a week.

If you would like to learn more you can listen to this two minute podcast

Its my first podcast that I must admit that I had a lot of help in making it from two excellent instructors who host an outstanding intro course in Podcasting.
I have always had an interest in Radio and I had the privilege of being a News Correspondent with Radio Regent. Radio Regent is an internet radio station that is operated by Focus Media Arts Centre and is publicly accessible on the internet and mobile devices. It began broadcasting on January 1, 2012 and serves as an alternative to mainstream commercial radio. Radio Regent provides Regent Park residents and members of the general public with free access to internet radio broadcast.

My work at Radio Regent has been a wonderful experience on many levels. its a great community of people who are committed to what they are doing but also have fun at the same time! I appreciated the opportunity to do this role without having to know anything about the technical side of things which has always been the barrier to volunteering at a radio station in the past.

Through this experience my interest in talk radio has really grown and it led me to become interested in Podcasting.

A few weeks ago I discovered an Intro to Podcasting Course that was being offered through ED Video on how to produce your own podcast. I took the course which included what gear I needed, how to find my audience and how to pick up my first sponsor. We even learned a few tech tips with the focus being on producing and distributing our first podcast.

My podcast is the first one of what I hope will be many more podcasts to come. I have all the information I need to know I just have to put it into practice

I hope you learn why the Career Zoom Ins are so valuable from the podcast and help us reach our ambitious goal of reaching out to 300 Canadians on every call

Feel free to contact me for more information about my experience with the podcasting course or about Career Zoom Ins

The Creation of Career Life Ballooning

Career Life Ballooning is the topic of the next free series that Career Aviators is offering.

Career Life Ballooning is a unique strategy for helping clients to discern their career path using the principles of positive psychology, guided imagery, mindfulness and narrative approaches to career management.

The idea started many years ago when I was involved in helping community groups to plan a healthy neighbourhood using guided imagery (GI). It was very effective in helping participants to plan the future health of their neighbourhood. GI infused a learning mindset and helped them to be positive and creative in their planning.

national-cancer-institute-eRExodEMiOE-unsplash.jpg

Later in my career, I was involved in a powerful application of GI. I was in charge of building programmes to strengthen the resilience of seriously ill children and families. We used a variation of GI which helped seriously ill young patients to take charge of their painful procedures. We helped them do this through breathing, relaxation and becoming deeply engaged in an activity, The process enabled them to experience the repeated painful procedures in a different way. Nothing was better than seeing young kids crying when they had to leave the cancer clinic instead of being fearful and resistant upon arrival.

katimavik_logo.png

Still later, I learned a new application of guided imagery in debriefing Katimavik staff and participants after completing their very intensive 6- 9 months field experiences. Guided imagery enabled staff and volunteers to pull far more learning from their past experiences.

When I established Career Aviators, I spent a full year doing independent research and meeting with practitioners in the field. When I reviewed the research on Narrative Approaches in Career Management, it just made sense to integrate guided imagery into the process. Clients enjoy the experience and it gives them useful information to help discern their future career path. I believe it is part of the reason that 93% of clients find positions in which they excel, value highly and love to do.

In this series you will get to experience the Career Aviators Career - Life Guided Imagery Process.

In a relaxed state, you will envision yourself in a beautiful hot air balloon looking down on the times in your life when you were happiest and most successful.

We will be your guide in this unique process, adapted from its use in health and business settings.

Next, you will create a life graph of these experiences and we will help you analyze your graph to uncover clues for your future path.

In this free,* one-week program, you will:

  • Define your strengths, values and what you are most curious about doing

  • Uncover or confirm the next steps in your career path

  • Experience the benefits of mindfulness in a job search

The Creation of The Career "Zoom In"

glenn-carstens-peters-npxXWgQ33ZQ-unsplash.jpg

I am an independent career professional. I help clients to find positions in which they will excel, value highly, and love to do.

Many people don't know what career professionals do, but just like a realtor helps clients to get the house they always wanted, we help people to flourish in their careers. With both life decisions, you can do it yourself. In the case of finding and purchasing your home, you can sort through all the useful and unhelpful information on the web and buy your own house, but it takes more time and you may end up with a property or legal issues that you just never anticipated. Similarly, you can work through all the steps of a career transition and find yourself with a job that just does not fit. Maybe its the same kind of role you had before but seemed different when you signed the offer of employment. In addition, you can spend a lot of time searching the wrong way and finding yourself with getting no replies to your applications of get turned down in the interview stage.

The average person is pretty comfortable finding a real estate professional to guide them in the purchase of their home, but for some reason, perhaps its cultural, people feel that they "should" find a career or job on their own and they are sometimes reluctant to reach out for help in the way they would if they were buying a property. Yet, the wisest people embarking on a career transition, realize that they will likely land in a job that fits better if they get help from a career professional. They see it as an investment in their life because they know that work takes up more than 60% of their waking hours. These people realize that work plays such a dominant part of our lives, that a job that does not fit can have ramifications to all other parts of the person's life and well-being. From a practical point of view, these people also realize that if a career professional can help them find a position even a month sooner than they can on their own, then increased earnings can often cover the cost of the help they receive from a career professional.

COVID 19 is creating more change in work and careers than we have witnessed in 100 years.

I am proud to be part of the The Guelph and Tri-City Career Collective, a new group of independent career professionals who want to reach out with a new initiative to help people prosper in the face of COVID 19 . We also hope that participants will become acquainted with the value of the role of career professionals in navigating and succeeding in career transitions.

We are hosting "Career Zoom In" as a free weekly online event during COVID 19.

It will be of great value to you whether you are the the vice president of the company or a working professional.

PODCAST: Get Yourself Ready To Negotiate Job Offers Post COVID-19

Photo by Carlos Kenobi on Unsplash

Career Aviators Ireland and Career Aviators Canada specialize in helping professionals, managers, and executives find positions in which they will excel, value highly, and love to do.

We  have teamed up to create this podcast series called Taking Charge Of Your Professional Future. These podcasts cover interesting topics relating to career discernment and job search strategies.

In coming podcasts we will delve into the career management aspects of outplacement, the rapidly changing future of work, job search, and work culture.

Today’s podcast is designed to get you ready to negotiate job offers post COVID-19.

Are you out of work, laid off, or worried about your job?

It's true that we all feel a little shattered and our economy has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. .Yet, even in the face of this stress, if you have past or current success in leadership or a professional role, this could be an excellent time to launch a job search.

Staff in many companies are working from home and may be more available for the critically important networking component of your search. While companies may not be hiring right now, smart hiring managers are still keeping their eye out for the right people to fill positions for when the economy recovers.

COVID-19 is going to change the way we do business forever and it will create structural changes and new opportunities as the economy starts its climb, so get yourself ready to negotiate offers.

Now is the time to prepare. You can use your increased flexibility in your schedule and the time while employers are not hiring to your advantage. Effective job search is  “front- end loaded” with far more time spent in the first phase in comparison to later stages of the search. This first phase requires careful self-assessment to discern your best path, resume reboot, and a lengthy period of highly strategic networking or field research. to uncover positions before they are posted.

Wise job seekers will use this economic down time for their first phase so they will be poised for interviews and job offers when the economy recovers.

Here are 9 critical steps to execute for a successful career transition after COVID-19:

  1. Take stock of your financial situation: Where are you at?. What funding is being offered by government to assist you? How long can you search?. Try to reduce your expenses to create the longest job search runway possible. Once you know your destination, work out an intensive workback plan for your search strategy.

  2. Consult with a career professional who can help you to expedite your search. Just as a realtor, investment advisor or personal trainer adds value to their clients' respective pursuits; a career professional will help you plan your career destination and get you there faster than you can on your own. Landing a job sooner will more than pay for the cost of their services,

  3. Discern Your Direction. Create a statement that clearly states the strengths that you want to use in your next career move, your deepest values that will drive your career and what you are most curious about pursuing.

  4. Set your sites on securing multiple offers.

  5. Consider pursuing a side hustle to help support your job search. It's critical that you not be “handcuffed” to a side hustle. You want to find a side hustle that does not take place during business hours and that will not exhaust you. You need to be free, open minded and positive to conduct the networking needed for your more permanent position. At the same time, a productive side hustle, that ties into your next career move will boost your spirits, bring in a little money and be great preparation for success in your next role.

  6. Consider pursuing online courses to strengthen your search. You have the time during COVID-19 to update your skills in the direction of your search. Online programs, including ones that are free are abundant. Taking such courses will give you the sense of accomplishment and purpose needed to optimize your search.

  7. Tune up your resume. Resumes need to be accomplishment oriented, clearly showing the magnitude of your successes aligned with your target roles.

  8. Recognize, that following  COVID-19, we will be more digital than ever before in our history. Now that you have a great resume, you can create a powerful  presence on line. You also need to learn how to become a “pro” at using online tools like Zoom and Google Hangouts to conduct your networking and for your future networking.

  9. Create a highly strategic networking or field research strategy to enlist 40 individuals in your target role to be your lookouts for positions before they are posted.

Keep networking as you proceed through resume customization, interview preparation, job interviews and position negotiation to get as many offers as possible.

Use this strategy and you will be poised to land a job that truly “fits”, during or following COVID-19.
